Ishikawa Goemon (* 16th century - Aug 10th 1594) is a Japanese folklore hero. Similar to Robin Hood, he is said to have robbed the rich and given it to the poor. Many myths and legends still exist about him today, such as the failed attempt to assassinate Toyotomi Hideyoshi, whereupon he was sentenced to death with other relatives and executed alive in boiling oil. He is said to have heroically tried to save his son by holding him out of the cauldron.
The John Lee Goemon Katana takes up this topic. Among other things, the tsuba shows Goemon executing after a wood engraving by Toyokuni Ichiyoai. In addition to other motifs, his name can be found on the Fuchi in Japanese script.
The lettering on the blade is etched.
