The laser engraving takes place with an CO2 laser.
Due to the heat of the laser, the writing is removed in the wood and lightly burned.
On metal, the surface is coated with a special paste and the laser produces an oxidation that produces a dark to black color. This annealing labeling looks like it is printed on, but can only be removed by grinding. No material is removed, there are no edges or burrs.
With anodized or coated handles or blades, the surface is lasered away, revealing the subsurface.
